Northwood University, or NU for short, is a private university with the main campus located in Midland, which is the county seat of Midland County, situated in the US state of Michigan, with a population estimated at a number of more than 40 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Midland is also the principal city of the Midland Micropolitan Statistical Area and the sister city of Handa, Japan.
NU was founded by Dr. Arthur E. Turner and Dr. R. Gary Stauffer, in 1959, and it was originally located in Alma, MI, before being moved to its present location, in Midland, in 1961. In addition to the main campus, in Midland, NU also has residential campuses in Cedar Hill, Texas (opened in 1966), West Palm Beach, Florida (opened in 1984), and a joint program with Hotel Institute Montreux in Montreux, Switzerland, since 2001.
NU's Michigan athletic teams are known as Timberwolves, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in various varsity sports, for both men and women, including in football, tennis, soccer, basketball and softball, including in men's baseball, in which they made their first ever appearance, to the GLIAC baseball tournament, in 2009, where they were runner-up, finishing 2nd, falling to the Lakers of Grand Valley State University.
The distinctive colors of the Timberwolves are NU Dark Blue and NU Lighter Blue.
